Gospel Legend Bill Moss Passes Away

TBGB learned from The Belle Report that Bill Moss, Sr., member of Detroit's Moss/Clark gospel music dynasty, went on to be with the Lord today. He died in a Detroit hospital.

Moss's sister, Mattie Moss Clark, almost needs no introduction, but for those who don't know, she was the leader of the Southwest Michigan State Choir of the COGIC and gave birth (literally) to the Clark Sisters.

Bill Moss is perhaps best known for founding the gospel group Bill Moss and the Celestials. A songwriter, Moss also started a record company, Bilesse, that recorded his group as well as other Moss Clark family members and Detroit artists. Moss' son, J Moss, has followed in the family business and has built a steady reputation as a gospel artist and A-list producer, the latter as part of the PAJAM team.

There's so much more to be said about Bill Moss and his role in the development of gospel music, but for the sake of getting this post out to you, I will be brief. As more details roll in about the services, I'll post them here.

Meanwhile, WLUW's "Gospel Memories" (www.gospelmemories.com) will pay tribute to Bill Moss by featuring his music and some of the recorded output of Bilesse Records on its July 1 broadcast.

I received the news of the passing of Gospel Music Legend Bill Moss Sr. with great sadness. In 2002 I was blessed with the opportunity to record the video for their live project. During the production I was able to spend quite a bit of time with minister Moss and his wife, evangelist Essie Moss, at their home conducting an interview with them for the video. When we started the project, I had no idea what a huge impact this great man and woman of God would have on my life. Bill Moss Sr. penned the words to a song that has carried me through some tough times ever since I first heard it. The song "Use What You Got", is about taking the little that you have and making the most of it until you are blessed with more.

Watch the video clip here:

Here's to the man that introduced the electric piano to the church.

My prayers go out to the Moss family, and particularly my good friend Bill Moss Jr.

God bless,

Damon Parnell

I would like to send my prayers to the Moss family, especially for our Minister of Music at Christian Tabernacle Church, Southfield, MI, Mr. Bill Moss, Jr. Not too long ago, Bill Moss, Sr. and his lovely wife sang "Use What You Got" during one of our services and I will always treasure that song because it ministered to my heart. Continued prayer for the entire family during this time of bereavement and many blessings.

Sincerely,

"Nezzi" Bell
