While Pastor J. Jasper Wilkins, Jr.’s debut CD Hymns for Him gives old church songs a contemporary touch – “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” has a slow swagger, Bill Withers-style – “Power in the Blood” is one hundred percent traditional.

Mother Virginia Gary serves as singer-evangelist, leading the Voices of WCC on a pulse-racing version of the congregational “blood hymn.” Gary’s raw vocal, reminiscent of the iconic Mama Burks of Mississippi Mass, gives the selection a straight outta church feeling, while the hard-charging chorus section solos alternate from the left and right channels.
