“Thank You”
Roy and Revelation
4 Winds Records (2011)
In the early 1960s, such vocal groups
as the Isley Brothers and the Contours borrowed liberally from gospel to build
their soul dynamism in sound, rhythm and choreography.
Roy (Ladson, Jr.) and Revelation, a young
quartet from South Carolina ,
collects the interest by injecting the exuberance of the Isley’s “Shout” and the
Contours’ “Do You Love Me” into their single, “Thank You.” Either that, or they’ve just created a new
subgenre: Carolina
beach gospel.
Members of the quartet list influences
such as the Canton Spirituals and Willie Banks, so you know they’re old-school.
