“I can’t believe this is
happening,” rues Renee Spearman. “How in
the world did I get here?” echoes D.J. Rogers.
Both sing their anguished questions to the heavens, but both have faith
that God will take them from “whoa” (bad) to “wow” (good) in due time.
"Whoa to Wow!," a languorous song of
encouragement, belongs as much to the soulful tenor Rogers as to the gospel-savvy Spearman,
especially when they duet at the song’s pinnacle moment near the
conclusion. The radio version fades in
medias res, but I prefer how the album version ends: Spearman and Rogers harmonizing on a
major seventh chord.
