“So
Good”

Billy
Preston may be gone but his spirit lives on in “So Good,” the latest single by Ohio ’s own gospel
ensemble Half Mile Home.
The group takes
Preston ’s 1974 “Nothing From Nothing” and,
while retaining its funkiness, gospelizes the song with lyrics about
how good the Lord is. They can’t
contain their excitement, either, as they punctuate the driving rhythm with righteous
growls and shouts.
Ironically,
gospel is where Billy Preston started his career, working with James
Cleveland and a host of others on the West Coast. He made a cameo appearance on organ for the Frazier-Goodson Gospel Singers and an early release by the Harold Bailey Singers of Chicago.
Check out the 1959 film St. Louis Blues to see a young Preston
in his silver screen debut.
