I'm not sure specifically how the Jubes got the echo sound on "Stretch Out," but I do know that Bernie Clapper who operated the Universal Recording Studio in Chicago was a masterful engineer. Other recordings -- secular and sacred -- made at Univeral had that same echo effect. Jimmy Reed's records on VJ have it, too.

I've read that Sam Phillips at Sun accomplished echo on his records by literally looping the tape in such a way to create drag pull on the audio, which created the echo effect. Maybe Bernie did the same.

Bob: Very good program. I enjoyed it. The wonderful gospel songs by the great gospel artist as well as the interview with Mr. Cleve Graham.

Great job on the interview with Mr. Graham. It was interesting listening to him talk about things which were not mentioned in the book. I especially enjoyed the song "Stretch Out." Absolutely outstanding song. The feel of the song took me back to the time it was recorded. Do you know how they got that echo sound in the recording? That echo effect is on most of their early recordings.
